The Best Sandwiches for Hiking
When you want more than some trail mix or a power bar on your hike, consider a yummy sandwich full of energy and nutrients to get you through your hike. Here are my best sandwich ideas for hiking that I’m sure you will love.
Nut Butter Sandwich
The classic peanut butter sandwich may seem overly humble and maybe even a little boring, but it packs a punch when it comes to hiking sandwiches. It doesn’t need refrigeration, isn’t bothered by being smashed flat, and delivers lot of nutrition in a small package.
Obviously peanut butter is the go-to nut butter, but don’t forget that there are many other varieties out there. Give almond butter and cashew butter a try. If you are feeling wild you might try some of the hazelnut spreads as well.
What about jelly you say?
Personally, I wouldn’t do a hiking peanut butter sandwich without adding in some sort of jelly or jam. In my book, a PB&J sandwich packs a great combination of sweet and savory, along with a variety of carbs, fats, and proteins to keep me going on my hike.

How do you pack a sandwich for hiking?
There are a lot of ways to keep your sandwich in shape on a hike, sandwich bags, containers, and wraps are the most common ways.
Sandwich Bags
On the whole, I’m not a fan of single-use sandwich bags. My personal feeling is that we are killing the planet with plastic, and we need to avoid single-use plastics when possible.
That being said, they are incredibly convenient and versatile, especially for taking a sandwich or snacks on a hike.
If you frequently take food on hikes, you may want to consider investing in some silicone sandwich bags. These are zip top, seal nicely, and you can wash them when you get home!
Sandwich Containers
Hard plastic sandwich containers are definitely the way to go if you don’t like risking your sandwich getting smashed in your pack before you have a chance to eat it. The only real issue that I have with them is that they are limited in their sizes and shapes.
Wraps for Your Sandwich
Another great option for keeping your sandwich contained on hikes are bees wax impregnated wraps. These are pretty sandwich proof, don’t contain any plastic, and are washable. I’m a big fan of these, but make sure you put it where it won’t get pulled open when you get things in or out of your pack.
