I like my coffee in the morning, even when I’m camping. The question is, what is the best coffee creamer for camping. I’ve tried several solutions and one that makes an acceptable back-woods coffee creamer is Laird Superfood Creamer. First some words on what Laird Superfood Creamer is, if it is good for you, and then why you might want to take it camping.
What is Laird Superfood Creamer?
In a nutshell, some pun intended, Laird Superfood Creamer is a mix of powdered coconut, with some calcium mixed in. That is it. The ingredients read like this:
- Coconut Milk Powder
- Organic Coconut Sugar
- Aquamin
- Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Effectively this is a coffee creamer made out of coconuts and a little Aquamin, a source of calcium derived from seaweed.
Is Laird Superfood Creamer Good For You?
As ingredients go, Laird Superfood Creamer is top notch.
- Dairy-Free
- Gluten-Free
- Vegan
- Soy Free
- Non-GMO
In addition to this, it is coconut which is supposed to be good for you and contains all the oils that are supposed to be good for your heart and body in general. If you have heard about MCTs, coconut oil is a good source of those.
Obviously in comparison to powdered coffee creamer, it is far superior in quality and doesn’t contain all the nasty ingredients found in most powdered creamers.
- CORN SYRUP SOLIDS
- HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL
- SODIUM CASEINATE
- DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE
- SODIUM ALUMINOSILICATE
- MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES
- ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR
- ANNATTO COLOR
Personally I try and stay away eating things I can’t pronounce or that I need to Google the effects of.
As a non-medical professional, I would say that Superfood Creamer is probably about as good for you as you can hope for in a coffee creamer.
Laird Superfood Creamer Really Isn’t Creamer
Before we go on any further, I must point out that Laird Superfood Creamer isn’t really creamer any more than “powdered coffee lightener” (powdered coffee creamer) is. I say this because it contains no dairy. If you are looking to get that smooth creamy taste, and lovely tan color that you get with half and half, you will be sorely disappointed.
That being said, it does do a good job of mellowing out the harsh tones in your coffee.
What does Laird Superfood Creamer Taste Like?
While the flavor is hard to describe exactly, it has a very mild hint of coconut, but not an overbearing one. This is actually a big plus for me as I am not a huge fan of coconut products in general. Beyond that, it does not have a ton of flavor, at least to my taste buds.
Why Take Superfood Creamer Camping?
To bring this full circle, let’s talk why you should take Laird Superfood Creamer camping. Here is my list of reasons.
- It is shelf-stable
- It mellows out coffee
- It has good stuff for your body
- It is light
- It won’t leak on your gear
- It doesn’t take up much room
Not a very scientific list, but those are my reasons. Right off the bat, being shelf-stable is a big one. 2-3 days without refrigeration means no bottles of half and half or liquid coffee creamer will work. Additionally, being powdered, it is lighter than liquid creamers, won’t leak on your gear, and doesn’t take up much room in your kit. Again, all big plusses for a coffee creamer to take camping.
Yes, if you really want to, you can take along those little containers of half and half, but you then have the issue of space, leakage, and extra garbage to pack back out of the woods.
Will it give you the same exact flavor as regular creamer? No, but it will do a good job and is a hell of a lot more convenient to take with you into the woods if you are camping or backpacking.
Other Flavors of Laird Creamers
I had only picked up this creamer at my local store and honestly hadn’t done a lot of poking around on the internet about it until I decided to write this. That is when I found out that they make a variety of flavors, including vanilla, cacao, chocolate mint, and even a mushroom one. Honestly, I’ll be giving those a try soon.
